Safety Valet

With less than a month left to the start of the school year, we are getting ready to welcome to our Calabash Cubs back to school! Be on the lookout for our PTO "Back to School" Newsletter that will be sent out in early August, filled with information you'll need to be ready for this brand new year.

However, we have one pressing request for your help, in order to make the return to school smooth and easy. We are looking for some amazing volunteer parents to be part of our Safety Valet team this year.

For those of you who aren't familiar, our Safety Valet is a volunteer-run drop-off option for students in grades 1-5 intended to reduce parking congestion and help get kids into school quickly and safely in the mornings. The Safety Valet runs along Eugene St., with the line looping around the school on Larkwood as needed. Parents stay in their cars, and volunteers open the car doors to help get children and backpacks out, and guide kids in the direction of the school entry gates. Safety Valet runs from 7:45 - 8:00AM daily. With enough volunteers in place, we hope to start Safety Valet on the second day of school (Tuesday, August 13th).

As returning volunteers will tell you, Safety Valet is one of the most fun, engaging and valuable volunteer jobs at Calabash. You will be joining a team of mighty morning helpers who are integral to the functioning of our school and truly appreciated by all our parents. Better yet, it takes only a 20 minute commitment (7:40 - 8:00AM) once a week. You'll arrive to school, drop your own kids safely inside the school gates, grab your safety valet vest, and be done by the time school starts. We also welcome grandparents, neighbors, and responsible high schoolers looking for community service hours.

To show our appreciation, we honor our yearlong Safety Valet volunteers with reserved seats to our Multicultural Festival in the spring (our returning families know how valuable these can be!) and a special popsicle party for your kids with Principal Gillis on campus at the end of the year.
